Gigabit improvements possible?

Goodday to all.
I have installed mpich2 on a cluster of machines based on dual opteron
Motherboards (Tyan 2882) and Linux SUSE 9 OS.
It works.
Obviously there is a great difference in throughput and delay between
intra-node and inter-nodes comunication and this affects the application
programs performances.
The obvious solution would be to buy a better, expensive network... No money
at the moment...

Is possible to improve the TCP-IP stack delay?
The motherboard as two gigabit ports.
There is a way to use  the second, unused gigabit channel to improve
performance?
