itaps-parallel [Fwd: Congratulations on your SC2008 Tutorial submission!]

Hi All,

I read through the notes/comments from the reviews for our SC08 tutorial
and they are generally positive (included below). We need to confirm
title, speakers and equipment needs by July 31 and submit final
materials for review by Sept 21. Abani Patra is our 'shepherd' and will
be reviewing our final materials.

Karen, Mark and Tim - are you still willing to be officially listed as
presenters?

I'd like to get together at the SciDAC meeting to discuss... are most
folks going to be there on Wednesday?

Lori

*Comments for Authors:*
Topic: A well developed proposal for a tutorial -- that will be very
useful to a key albeit somewhat small audience. The biggest obstacle to
developing new high performance codes and incorporating new physics in
them is often the time and programming resources required to handle the
complex data from geometry or the use of techniques like AMR.
Popularizing the type of methodology that this group is developing will
greatly enable other groups to get to applications faster and accomplish
ORDERS of magnitude improvement. The only downsides I see in this
tutorial is a lack of context and comparison to other tools of this
nature that are also out there. Both of these are easily addressed and
probably will be. The brevity of the proposal format precludes details.

Presenters: The presenters are leading figures in the research area they
propose and have a history of working together over more than 10 years.
I have known their work and used much of it in my personal research and
it is of the best quality. I would have liked to see one or more of the
junior researchers in their group also involved in this presentation.

*Comments for Authors:*
This is a very good, well-written and comprehensive proposal. It has
clearly defined goals and the topic is very relevant to the SC
community. The targeted audience is appropriately identified and
prerequisites defined well so that the students who show up won’t be
disappointed. As computer architectures move toward petascale, the need
for advanced software systems to handle the complexities of advanced
mesh, geometry and field manipulations becomes more critical. Providing
application developers with the knowledge of and capability for use of
the advanced technologies developed by the ITAPS project, ie libraries
with minimal intrusiveness to the application, is clearly valuable to
them. The sample visual material provided clearly demonstrates the
capabilities of this team to deliver a well-structured tutorial.

*Comments for Authors:*
The proposal is well presented and the topic is interesting. My main
concern is that it is quite specific topic for a short audience.

*Comments for Authors:*
This tutorial will present tools developed by Center for ITAPS
(Inteoperable Technlogoies for Advanced Petascale Simulations),
including dynamic partitioning, mesh adptation, mesh quality improvement
and front tracking. All of these tools are indespensible for many
large-scale computational science computations and a general working
knowledge is essential. I concur with the decision to use a hands-on
approach as the most effective means of teaching this material.

Although the authors claim that this could be a half-day tutorial, given
the amount of material that needs to be presented, this tutorial would
be better served as a full-day tutorial.

It would good to have comparison to other tool kits, such Chombo and
    Samrai.

THIS TUTORIAL HAS BEEN ASSIGNED A SHEPHERD TO GUIDE THE REVISION FOR
THE FINAL MATERIALS. YOU MUST HAVE THE SHEPHERD APPROVAL YOUR FINAL
    MATERIALS.

The shepherd is Abani Patra, apatra at nsf.gov. You should contact him
via email as soon as possible.

Your draft of materials to the shepherd must be at least 1 week
before the final deadline. Note that this deadline is not flexible.
