InterPlay: Intransitive Senses

InterPlay: Intransitive Senses
 is a multimedia, multi artist
performance transmitted over Internet 2, experienced both live and on
the Internet. This is Another Languages first performance of this type.

InterPlay: Intransitive Senses
, will take place on April 19, 2003,
7:00 P. M. MST (1:00 GMT) at University of Utah Intermountain Network &
Scientific Computation Center Auditorium, 155 S 1452 E. It will feature
performances by Alex Caldiero, Harold Carr, Flavia Cervino-Wood, Beth
Miklavcic, Hanelle Miklavcic and directed by Jimmy Miklavcic. This new
work includes four simultaneous events by local performers. The audience
can experience the event in several ways. They may attend and experience
each of the live performance events, view the video streams at any of
the Access Grid sites, or view them online with their home or work
computer. For additional information, go to
http://www.anotherlanguage.org/interplay or call 801.585.9335.

Performance Description
The four performance events are simultaneously captured, mixed,
digitized and encoded into video data and are streamed onto the network
with the use of a multimedia communications workstation. The four
streams are received by a similar workstation or personal computer and
displayed on the screen. The Director manipulates each video stream to
appear in any of the four video playback windows similar to Windows
Media Player or Apples Quicktime Player. This creates a work that takes
four individual stories and weaves them into a multi layered distributed
tapestry. Each artist has his/her thought process that leads to his/her
artistic performance. The director moves that into another level by
taking those performances and incorporating them into his own thought
and creative process. There will be two types of viewers, local
audiences experiencing the live event and remote audiences watching the
four video streams either projected on a large screen in an auditorium
setting or on a personal computer. Online viewers will need a minimum of
a DSL or cable modem connection. The performance will also be available
at a later date, on the website, www.anotherlanguage.org. Audience
members will find a unique view of the diverse artistic culture that
thrives in Utah. Another Language believes that creating more
opportunities to present artistic ideas attracts and develops a new
audience.

Internet 2
Internet 2 (I2) is a recently activated network parallel to our current
internet, connecting all the major universities, colleges and research
institutions throughout the United States, Asia, Australia and Europe.
No commercial network traffic is routed through this network making it
the perfect high speed infrastructure for video/audio transmission.

Access Grid
A new technology for multimedia communications, called the Access Grid
Node, has been established by Argonne National Labs to assist
researchers in collaborations with colleagues in other areas of the world.
The University of Utahs Center for High Performance Computing has
implemented an Access Grid system. Another Language has been given the
opportunity to use this technology to create new artistic works and
eventually collaborate with other artists around the world.

Another Language

Another Language Performing Arts Company is dedicated to creating a
forum for exploration in art and technology. Founded in 1985, Another
Language is known for forging new ground and stretching the boundaries
of artistic expression and has always been on the cutting edge of
presenting performing arts in Utah. In 1995 the organization was the
first in Utah to recognize the potential of using the Internet as a way
to create and perform multimedia works. Another Language believes that
www.anotherlanguage.org is more than just a website. This technology is
used as a venue for creative pursuits and educational enhancement. The
use of computer and video technology serves to enhance and increase the
exciting statements that can be made through the arts. Founders Beth
Miklavcic and Jimmy Miklavcic present and display a series of new
digital paintings, animations, writings, music compositions and video on
Another Languages website. The website is updated regularly with many
historical photographs and posters of concerts, dances and events from a
long history of creativity. The site also features Beth Miklavcics
latest explorations into 3D animation and imagery,
Surreal
Environments.
At the same time anotherlanguage.org receives more that
20,000 visits each month from students of Utah schools, residents
throughout the entire state, as well as, viewers from across the world,
all for free.
