I have seen this problem when I forget to remove Pulse Audio.  Not sure 
what the package name is on Ubuntu, but on Fedora you need to remove the 
alsa-plugins-pulseaudio package.

Still not sure if this will solve your issue, but I have seen that 
behavior when Pulse is installed.
