Hmmm, I'd forgotten about that bug.  I think this is an unrelated 
issue.  The issue in bug #1307 is that /etc/env.d/99globus sets 
LIBPATH and at least in 2005-05, portage (or gcc-config) didn't 
like that.  I can't verify if that is still a bug because I can't 
get to the point where 99globus is installed because of the issues 
mentioned earlier (the RUNPATH/RPATH business).

I have opened Bug #1431 to track this RUNPATH issue.
