Hi Jeremy,
Rat audio device selection on the mac is a little different from the
other platforms.
You shouldn't need to set the audio device from within rat -- I don't
believe the code uses that setting (yet?). Still, on my machine (G5
tower) the device in rat does say "default sound device" instead of "no
audio device", so if you change that you could try hitting the Quit
button in rat to save the settings.

The main place you should set your default audio device (for input and
output) is in the general osx "System Preferences" -> Sound.

As far as microphone hardware, here's what I've found so far. First,
Apple's details on the G4's line-in are scarce if not nonexistant, and it
seems to be different than the G3 and G5 (I could be wrong here). Also,
an adapter may not work since apple's plug designs are often non-standard.

You could ask apple support more about that, but I would first try one of
the usb microphones that have recently been reported working on this
mailing list. The ones mentioned so far are the Plantronics DA-50,
DSP-100, and DSP-400. I would expect more if not all plantronics
microphones to work, but we're not sure of that yet.

Eric
