Giving an answer to my own question... it seems that changing all the displays to 16 bits depth alleviated the problem quite a lot.

  That Nvidia card (PCI) i've tried and after opening up a number of videos it gets bogged down. The Matrox Pahelia AGP card with 256 or more memory there is no delay on while the Nvidia there is.
