I don't understand how sharing an ASN would break IP multicast.  Can you 
exchange unicast IP traffic properly with each other?  If so, then the 
problem is probably somewhere else.

On the other hand, if you have a different routing policy than the other 
university, then you probably should have an ASN anyway.  The last time I 
checked, getting an ASN required only $500 in fees, plus documentation that 
you will be peering with at least two other ASNs (such as your commercial 
ISP and Internet2 GigaPOP, or other universities, or whatever).
