The version of rat in the UCL CVS builds cleanly with:

gcc version 3.3.2 20031022 (Red Hat Linux 3.3.2-1)
gcc version 3.4.2 [FreeBSD] 20040728
gcc version 3.3 20030304 (Apple Computer, Inc. build 1666)

You may wish to resynchronise with the changes there. I'm hoping UCL 
will do a new release soon.
