Hi,
The CCS Wednesday Seminar will continue today with the following
seminar:
Title: "Using Cocoon in Humanities Digital Libraries"

  Speaker: Hugh Cayless
           University of North Carolina

  Venue: Lucky Lab

  Time: 3:30 Eastern Today

Abstract: Computing projects in the humanities present special
problems: they are often focused more on documents rather than data, they
often involve content providers who are subject matter experts, but who
are not programmers, and are perhaps not technically inclined, and they demand
a high degree of flexibility in the manipulation and presentation of the
documents they deal with. At the University of North Carolina's Office of
Arts and Sciences Information Services, we have been using Cocoon as a
platform for various applications, including digital library
services. Cocoon is a Java-based XML web publishing framework developed
by the Apache software Foundation. Its design and features make it a
particularly useful tool for developing digital library services for
humanities computing projects. This talk will include a brief
introduction to Cocoon, a discussion of why it is such a good fit for electronic
publication in the humanities, and will provide several examples of its
use in current projects.

All sites are invited to participate in the seminar. Sites are requested
to join us by 2:45 Eastern for A/V Testing.

Thanks,
