[AG-TECH] beacon, vtc, multicast???

Code exists in ConferenceXP to modify the Windows XP Firewall settings
from managed code. See Firewall.cs under the MSR.LST.Net.Rtp project.
While this code is in C#, it could either be ported to VB.Net or it
could be compiled as a separate assembly that is callable from VB.Net as
is. Be glad to offer pointers on either.

This is how we open and close firewall ports on the host using
ConferenceXP automatically so that users are neither blocked nor tempted
to shut off the firewall ;-)

Subject: Re: [AG-TECH] beacon, vtc, multicast???

well ... when the Detective began, host based firewalls were not
pervasive & the early goal was to pick ports that wouldn't normally be
used on a Win98 machine ... so we threw darts at the wall and decided
that the Detective would use the following ports:
    6666
    7777
    8888

We're going to change this in the next "semi-release" to use well-known
ports (80, 21, etc.) to the Detective Server on Abilene which we hope
will pass thru "normal" host based firewalls. This will, we hope,
discourage end-users from turning off their host-based firewalls (and
thus generating more exposure to their machine).

Any & all advice will be appreciated - if you prefer you can email me or
email "detective at internet2.edu" <mailto:detective at internet2.edu> .

hi,

could someone refresh my memory? doesn't the moo run over port
7777 also? and wasn't that also a problem due to that port being
blocked or squeezed because it was the napster port? (it was always
extremely slow for us; i guess there's a proxy now or something?).
seems like some other port number would be more useful in these
filtered environments. why is 7777 the port of choice?

	hi,

not sure if there's a built-in tool in AG 2.0 but you can
download a nice
little utility from detective.internet2.edu called internet
detective. this
will test for multicast connectivity, connection to the Abilene
network, and
	bandwidth tests.

Note, though, that the new version of the tool runs over port 7777, and
so may
get blocked by various P2P firewall rules.
