Title: Virtual Rooms Video Conferencing System
Speaker: Philippe Galvez (CalTech)
Day/Date: Wed Nov 6 12:10-1:30 PM (PDT)

		      ABSTRACT

The Virtual Rooms Videoconferencing Service (VRVS) provides a
worldwide videoconferencing service and collaborative environment
to the research and education communities. VRVS uses Internet2 and
ESnet high-performance network infrastructure to deploy its web-based
system, which now includes more than 13,250 registered hosts running
the VRVS software in more than 60 different countries. More then 45 VRVS
network servers (or reflectors) are installed throughout the U.S.,
South America, Europe, and Asia. VRVS hosts an average of 400 multipoint
videoconferencing and collaborative sessions worldwide every month.
First implemented in 1997, VRVS continues to expand and implement new
digital video technologies, including H.323 I.T.U. standard integration,
MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 videoconferencing integration, shared environment,
security, and Quality of Service.

Today, VRVS provides gateway functionality between AccessGrid nodes and
desktops, as well as AccessGrid and H.323 technology. New network
servers have been installed recently in Brazil, Romania, Hungary,
Portugal, and five network servers have been deployed over
Internet2’s Abilene backbone network. The current implementation
of VRVS features multi-protocol, multi-OS support for all significant
video-enabled clients including: H.323, Mbone, QuickTime, MPEG-2,
Java Media Framework, and other clients. The seminar will focus
on the new capability provides by the latest version V3.0 (11/2002)
and its future evolution.
