Hello All

Please join us for the MS thesis defence of a graduate student at EVL. As
far as I know, this is the first time a thesis defense is being done on
the AG. A brief abstract of the thesis topic is given below.

Venue : Full Sail
Time : 3 - 4 PM Monday Central Time

Title: A Unified and Collaborative Approach to Analyze Networks

Time: 3 PM - 4 PM

Date: 15th October, Monday

Thesis Summary:

Networks constantly grow in size and are collectively managed by network
managers of different organizations or institutions.
Most existing approaches provide means to monitor and analyze problems in
networks through network measurement and data collection techniques.
However, there exists a need for understanding network problems in the
context of applications and vice versa. Also there is no existing network
analysis tool which takes advantage of group collaboration to accelerate
problem solving. Working towards this goal, this thesis proposes a unified
and collaborative approach to analyze networks and a framework design to
fit in new network tools.

The thesis demonstrates the result by introducing a new type of network
analysis tool called uCAN (Unified Collaboratory for Analyzing Networks).
uCAN provides a framework for ubiquitous access to active tests and SNMP
queries on a network alongside with network performance visualization from
an application. Network managers can also share their workspace
interfaces with remote collaborators. New users can therefore log on to a
collaborative session, view results of operations initiated by others and
and also request control of interfaces that they see, to conduct their own
tests on the remote test-bed.

The important focus of the thesis has been to define the requirements of
such a system and propose a framework for adding new tools into such an
environment. The final goal is to work towards providing a more complete
view of the entire network to everyone involved in managing it.
