Regional Director at the time you all posted this concern with the hissing??

What sort of speakers do you have? If you have powered speakers, and there
is an error in the routing, if you have the gain turned up very high you
are likely to be generating some hiss.
I'd recommend going through the audio balancing steps at the end of the
audio tutorial at
http://www-unix.mcs.anl.gov/~olson/AG/AudioTutorial/AudioTutorial.htm
If you successfully go through all of these steps, your system should be
happy. If one of them fails, you will have pretty closely pinpointed the
problem you may be having.
