Michael,

Have a look at AccessGrid/packaging/BuildSnapshot.py, where you can  
see it being built and then copied into the bin directory without  
using a Makefile.

Also, if you look at the Fedora (closest system to SUSE?) source rpm at:
	http://www.vislab.uq.edu.au/ag3/fedora/7/SRPMS/ 
AccessGrid-3.1-0.20070629cvs.fc7.src.rpm
then you can see how its built for a standalone package, again  
without a dedicated Makefile.
