APS network problems

This is a message from the APS people asking how to proceed with a
recurring problem they've been having. They occasionally can't get a ping
response from their server at APS. The server is bmc90.ser.aps.anl.gov
(AG server on port 8000) and they are connecting from UGA.
Since this seems to be a major issue for them, does anyone else have more
specific suggestions besides working with their networking people?
Eric

Subject: APS network problems

Eric,

We at UGA have been having several problems connecting to APS using
AccessGrid.

It's not an AG problem. We feel it's a network problem.

Many times (4-5 times a week) we attempt to connect to APS from UGA with no
success.

The AG Venue times out, so we ping to make sure the machine is up. Lo and
behold, it's down.

Would you say you have seen the same pattern of downtime or might this be
something unique to the past few months?

I'm bringing this to your attention since network connectivity is a
must-have for AG to be successful. I think we have a great
plan, and a great product to use, but if things continue in this manner our
AG project will be a flop. Any ideas or know of
anyone we should bring this matter to?

Thank you in advance for your help and input.

--Vic
