Sounds like at the end of the day the HD video would solve the problem she's
addressing (at the end of the email).

Ivan, thanks so much for your prompt, warm reply! I am quite excited about
the potential applications of the AG in the k-12 classroom. The initial
response by the students was (of course), "COOOOOOL!" The potential of
communicating world wide with the capabilities of the AG offers the
opportunity for our students to interact in a much more diverse, global
community than our small town can offer. Here are some of the ideas roaming
through my brain:

1)TechClub to learn how to operate our PIG - I think that the more involved
the students are in the operation of the technology tool, the more invested
they are, the more they will learn. I also think that the "teacher" needs to
be free to manage the classroom and all the necessary interactions to guide
achievement of the desired learning outcomes of any particular "lesson"

2)I see the AG as a communications tool that could put students in touch
with scientists/engineers/faculty at major universities/corporations who
otherwise would not likely communicate with 13-year-old students. This
communication could be as simple as a one-time session in which the adults
shares information about their role in the workforce or academia to a
long-term mentoring situation in which students communicate with adults as
the students frame their own science research.

3) I would really like to have other classrooms established with a PIG so
that students in my classroom could partner with classrooms in other
communities/other countries. I am particularly concerned about the fact that
my students live in a county that is 98.8% white - many students have
virtually no exposure to diversity.

I just want students to learn how to seek out new, broader worlds than the
community in which they are being raised. We can't expect a university
professor to travel to our school, but perhaps we could capture them for an
hour at a location near their campus office, for example. I really invision
the AG as being more revolutionary to the classroom than the Internet. The
face-to-face personal interaction the the key - with personal relationships
estalblished there is always a greater committment to learning (or dong a
job well) than when an individual is alone....I think that is just human
nature. I think that k-12 students would rise to a whole new level of
effort, engagement and as a result learning, in an environment of the AG!!!!

The component that I think I need in the classroom is to be able to project
onto a large screen the visual frame of the room with which we are
communicating over the AG. I have found that about eight students can easily
stay engaged with our current 3-monitor screen situation, but I lose the
other 28 if they are physically too far from the monitor.

Well, I must run to a session, but I look forward to continuing this
conversation!

Sincerely,
Debbie

Hi Debbie,

There's plenty of room for everyone in the AG. We'd be happy to have your
students reviewing documents as part of the AGDP, or even learning to
program using the Access Grid as a sandbox. There are a lot of opportunities
to meet and talk with widely scattered people with very differing
backgrounds -- from arts to science to business.

One thing that I'd be very interested to hear from you is how you envision
using the Access Grid in the classroom and what's missing to make that easy
for you to do? We'd be happy to consider your requirements as we build the
future versions of the software.
