Interesting idea.  Chew on this:

If presence were truly peer to peer, there'd have to be a layer of
services providing something like DNS for the peers trying to find each
other.  What would that look like?

Can I update the cached stuff at that layer because I'm me?  Who manages
the authoritative information?  What's the protocol look like?
