Barry,
You seem to be right that my style file was looking for an author; it seems to have also been looking for a year, hence the empty brackets. Unfortunately, adding an author and a year caused only those two fields to be printed in the bibliography (leaving out the rest of the info generated by -citation). I'm using agufull08.bst.
I'll wait to see what the Hypre folks say. I just want to give them proper citation.

Is this ok? Or should it produce something different in the text? I think your bibliography style file uses some shortened form of the bibtex key for the this.

Likely your bibliography style file requires an author field and so is putting in () since this bibliography entry doesn't have an author entry. You can try adding an author field manually and see if that improves things.
