Thanks, I was aware of such functions. I think I may have found where
my confusion is. If I have a regular Vec, HDF5 SetTimestep and
IncrementTimestep work as expected.
Instead the following does not work for me:

[...]
DMCreateGlobalVector(da, &solution);
[...]  // fill the vector solution and restore
HDF5Open
HDF5SetTimestep(H5_viewer, 0);

ierr = VecView(solution,H5_viewer); ERRCHKQ(ierr);
HDF5IncrementTimestep(H5_viewer);
ierr = VecView(solution,H5_viewer); ERRCHKQ(ierr);
[...]

I get the following external library error from HDF at the line of the
second VecView:
