If it is a different algorithm the software needs to be different,  isn't that self-evident?</blockquote></div><div><br></div><div>As a related matter, Umfpack has an optional dependency on Cholmod which is almost all of SuiteSparse. I never implemented --download-cholmod because it's more difficult to install than building all of SuiteSparse. Would it be reasonable for the --download stuff to always build all of SuiteSparse? We can still support linking to the user-provided umfpack/cholmod/amd independently from all of SuiteSparse.</div>
