I'm not sure why I use the full path to nc in the config.

You can check if 'nc' is in your path (on red-wtrw) - or if its at /usr/bin/nc

ssh wdn at red-wtrw.lanl.gov which nc

Alternative is ssh-portforwarding as suggested by Aron.

1. setup ssh-portforwardig in a terminal that you won't use
<keep this running as long as you need it>

ssh -N wdn at red-wtrw.lanl.gov -L10022:lu-fe1.lanl.gov:22

2. From your normal terminal use GIT with a URL using the forwarded port.

git clone ssh://localhost:10022/usr/projects/artab/users/wdn/repos/git/petsc
