I initially used the gfortran binary provided by the HPC Mac OS X website at <a href="http://hpc.sourceforge.net/">http://hpc.sourceforge.net/</a> , which happens to be in 32-bit, and therefore gives rise to the incompatibility issue.<div>
A 64-bit version is available for Mac OS X at <a href="http://gcc.gnu.org/wiki/GFortranBinaries#MacOS">http://gcc.gnu.org/wiki/GFortranBinaries#MacOS</a> .</div><div>After this installation, the MPICH configure and make steps performed smoothly.</div>

Windows+Linux is theoretically possible (given the same restrictions as above), but I personally wouldn't bother with it. It's probably more pain than it's worth and may not work in the end.<br>
