For the Linux cluster we do not use SMPD. We do use that on Windows clusters. Things work just fine there for all our programs, including cpi.

For the Linux cluster we do the standard build/install. Then we use mpdboot and then mpiexec.

Sorry, but I have no experience with SMPD on Linux systems.

Have you tried the cluster/network testing programs provided by MPICH2?
