[MPICH] MPICH 1 or 2: heterogeneous data representation?

You are definitely going to need heterogeneous support.  64 bit/32 bit is
enough to cause that, and I don't even know what the type sizes are on the
Alpha machine (or the endianness for that matter).  All the Intel machines
at least are little endian.
