You need mbconvert only for formats with special build options. Exodus format is available from the GUI itself. If you just specify the mesh file name with appropriate extension in the "Configure" tab of the core view in the RGG GUI. There is a field "Output Mesh File", specify "mesh.exo" and it should write "mesh.exo" as an exodus file.
