FYI, latest update from Kevin. Short summary for the tl;dr challenged: ;)

Current proposal for ANL Pool League to stay at Q:

  1) session buy-in will increase from $5 to $10
  2) nightly match fee will increase from $6 to $8
  3) play must finish by 10 PM, which means matches will be reduced
from 5 to 4 per night

Continue reading below for the full details. Comments, thoughts,
alternate proposals? I'll share my thoughts in a separate email.

All,

Today I received this message from Bob Taft (owner?) of Q Billiards (see below). In short he has regular patrons who want 9' tables 4-5 nights a week. And, those patrons aren't happy that they can't have access to the tables on Tuesdays between 10pm-12am. The owner is trying to appeal to what he believes is his larger revenue source (them).

Q is willing to host our league if we:

a) increase what we pay for the tables from $25/night to $60/night
b) finish league play by 10pm

This may be something that the Pool League can accommodate. If we make some adjustments to our fee structure and the number of matches that we play per night this is a viable option. While I don't like the manner in which Q Billiards has approached this, I can see where the Argonne Pool League can benefit from this situation. I have been unhappy with the number of make-up matches we have needed recently. Also, if pool runs past midnight, I don't get home until close to 1am. I have to be at work early on Wednesdays; late nights at pool have been negatively impacting me. Jason Boggs has been helping me get through the weeks. If it weren't for him, I would have had to step down by now.

Here is what I propose:

1) Increase the League fee from $5 to $10.
2) Increase the Match fee from $6 to $8
3) Reduce the number of matches played per night from 5 to 4.
-This will reduce the time needed to finish an evening's matches.
-This will reduce the need for players by teams who are struggling to get 5 players per night.
-Teams HAVE to finish all of their matches by 10pm (including using the practice table).
If you have slow players,... speed them up!
4) The League Officer (Kevin) will reduce his compensation by $100 per session.

I am open to other suggestions, but I think that by doing the above we will still have a league and we can make the proprietors of Q happy. If we can come to an agreement, pool can start on schedule at 6pm next Tuesday.

I welcome any and all comments.

Kevin

Hi Kevin,

I just wanted to say thank you for the past years of you patronage. Joaquin had asked me to email you and explain our position. Downers Grove has a different structure than Darien had in the past. We had more room / better kitchen / Tues slower. By having your league in Darien it didn't hinder access to table to our other customers who are there many days a week. The problem is in Downers Grove it is. We have gotten many complaints from customers that are there 4-5 times a week that we never have 9 foot tables for them on Tuesday. Please understand that as they are the ones who are there 4-5 times a week we must do what we can to make them happy. Otherwise the loss in sales could be very bad for the bar. If you guys were able to be done sooner (6pm-10pm) , with the tables given up to our regular customers at that time we could still host the league. We would do those hours for $60 a night. If not I completely understand and appreciate your past patronage.

I know when we discussed before everyone wanted to stay on 9 foot tables. If that has changed we could perhaps host it at Darien again on the 7 ft tables.

Thanks for understanding,

Bob Taft
