I'm not in favor of the draft system.  Who wants to be "the last man standing"? 
  The current system is fine the way it is.  New people who don't know anyone 
usually get put on a team that needs extra people.  New people who know someone 
on the league usually get put on the team of the person/people they know.

As for "evenly matched", as Rob stated, the handicap system is pretty good at 
leveling the playing field.
