The number of minority graduate students at any institution is small. The
2000-2001 Taulbee Survey identified only 9 African American, 14 Hispanic
American and 5 Native American PhD graduates <br>
out of 912 PhD graduates nationwide. Strong support systems are critical
to <br>
the success of any rigorous graduate program; especially graduate
programs <br>
in computer engineering, computer science and computational science. Such
<br>
programs are very demanding, due to the significance of research
projects. <br>
This rap session will explore some critical factors that impact minority
<br>
students in their decision to attend graduate school, pursue a PhD and
<br>
obtain the PhD. Faculty mentors will be present to highlight the
importance <br>
of a research experience during a student's undergraduate career in order
<br>
to facilitate their successful completion of graduate school.<br>
