NMI Packaging Integration
The NSF Middleware Initiative (NMI) seeks to enable the integration of
key software packages, standards, and best practices to form a national
middleware infrastructure for science, engineering and education.
Notwithstanding, the degree of utilization of resources, in general, and
computational resources, in particular, is well known to depend on the
level of flexibility and ease with which users can access and deploy the
resources. No matter how beneficial a resource or tool is
proclaimed to be, if users are not able to access and meet their
respective needs, then the resource is very rarely used. In this effort,
we limit our scope to the coordination of the software packaging
components through the engagement of user interfaces that enable easier
access to and incorporation of the software packages. In addition,
we provide a means to determine package component compatibility and
determine whether or not versions will enable or prohibit effective
integration between software components. Finally, we are tasked to
provide an online “user’s manual” to explain functionality and to assist
users in maneuvering between the software packages.
