                                                                        <p><font face="Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular">In the early 1990s, the graphics community widely acknowledged the promise and potential of large-scale projection immersive environments. We know now that immersive virtual reality systems comprise not only a novel display environment. They demand a new paradigm for interaction with information and with our colleagues and audiences in research, production, and entertainment situations. We envisioned myriad opportunities to use VR to transform the ways in which we visualize and interact with complex information. Since 1995, the number of immersive display facilities has grown at a fast pace. In 1999 alone, some 200 new installations were set up world-wide. These installations can be found in academic, research, industrial, and public sites all around the world. Applications include engineering design, medical training, architectural walk-throughs, military simulations, entertainment rides and remote meetings.</font></p>
                                                                        <p><font face="Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular">We have yet to reach VR nirvana, however. A significant challenge faces the organization that builds an immersive display facility. While the hardware technologies have evolved, and the business infrastructure has emerged, there is not a single integrated set of commercial or research tools to effectively and elegantly design, build and run virtual environments. There is also no much information about what it is needed to develop a successful virtual reality facility, integrate it with on-going projects, and transfer the results into a working environment.</font></p>
                                                                        <p><font face="Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular">This presentation will cover over 10 years of experience in making virtual reality a working tool for research and industrial groups. It will focus on the process of creating the supporting infrastructure and strategies for successful technology transfer to collaborators and partners. The talk will also present the challenges faced in building a self-supported multidisciplinaryVR facility and keeping it current with the changes and advances in VR technology.</font></p>
                                                                        <p><font face="Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular"><b>Bio</b></font></p>
                                                                        <p><font face="Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular">Dr. Carolina Cruz-Neira is a Litton Associate Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department and the Associate Director of the Virtual Reality Applications Center, both at Iowa State University. She is the recipient of the Iowa State University Foundation 2000 Award for Early Achievement in Research and in 1997 she was featured by BusinessWeek magazine as a &quot;rising research star&quot; in the new generation of computer science pioneers.</font></p>
                                                                        <p><font face="Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular">She is currently involved in a variety of projects in the field of virtual reality. Her group has developed VR Juggler (<a href="http://www.vrjuggler.org">http://www.vrjuggler.org</a>) an operating environment for the development and execution of immersive applications, and Octopus, a network environment to support collaborative VR Juggler applications. She is also working on the integration of wearable interfaces in virtual worlds, human factors evaluation of virtual worlds, and designing hardware to improve VR technology.</font></p>
                                                                        <p><font face="Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular">Dr. Cruz-Neira was the developer of the CAVE virtual reality theater, designing the system physical configuration, hardware and software. She holds the CAVE record of invention together with Thomas A. DeFanti, and Daniel J. Sandin. She has done extensive research in the applicability of CAVE technology to science, engineering and art. She is the co-founder with Oliver Riedel, of the Immersive Projection Technology Workshops, the premier forum for the presentation and discussion of state-of-the-art technologies and applications of projection-based displays. She has also organized numerous courses and panels at ACM SIGGRAPH and IEEE VR.</font></p>
                                                                        <p><font face="Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular">Dr. Cruz obtained a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) from the Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL) at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) in 1995. Her PhD research involved the design and implementation of the CAVE and the development of paradigms to integrate the CAVE in computational science and engineering applications. She received her Master's degree in EECS at EVL at UIC and graduate Cum Laude in Systems Engineering at the Universidad Metropolitana in Caracas, Venezuela.</font></p>
