We had an acoustic engineer work with us on our first 3 nodes (and others), who also did some large-scale projects around Australia and is a good geek at heart :-). He looked into both of them in a lot of detail, and I've asked him to write up his reasoning. I'm not an audio specialist, so don't want to misrepresent things. But basically it was things like larger buffers, faster CPU, more complex filtering capabilities, more flexible multi-pathing, complex digital I/O - and at about 30-50% less cost (he wasn't the supplier ;-) ).

I don't know if the XAP800 has been enhanced since then.

This is hard to quantify, we haven't used the gware software. The current control software we are using on the ef2280 looks very good - there are way too many things to twiddle :-), on the input, the output and through the processing pipelines and matrix, plus programming possibilities on the digital I/O channels (which we haven't used yet). I guess it depends on what you are looking for, and how much the user knows about audio systems. I tend to leave most things to the engineer to twiddle, but know enough to tinker with levels and muting devices if I have to (which is rare). It also doesn't drive the cpu to 100%, which gware at one stage "appeared" to do a lot (I think it was decided it was just a busy poll loop?).

We don't get a telephone gateway with the ef2280, but we (will) have a separate approach to that (since we have a campus full of IP telephony and more than enough gateways).

If I get something useful out of the engineer I will pass it on.

Cheers,
        Markus
