This is quite enough performance to run a beacon.  The only thing the 
beacon really needs is a Java 1.2 runtime, and I have every confidence that 
Slackware should be able to provide that.

For the beacon multicast group, 10BaseT should be sufficient.  That will 
let you get the IP multicast routing protocols operating and 
tested.  However, you should be planning to upgrade that to 100Base 
Ethernet before doing your first real Access Grid participation.

In terms of IP multicast deployment, please feel free to put me in contact 
with your campus networking people.  I would be pleased to assist to 
whatever level I can, up to and including traveling to your campus to help.
