Access Grid Introduction

All,

With the New Mexico Chautauqua fast approaching I want to pass along some
thoughts on what I consider to be the some of the most critical presentations --
the introduction of the Access Grid vision and a demonstration of its
capabilities by by Larry and Rick.

Here goes:

Larry has the opening keynote session. I think the approach should be for the
live audience to see only Larry and his slides -- so that it looks much like a
"regular" presentation. Remote sites should receive feed of Larry for their
local audiences but no remote site will be seen by the live audience.

Larry will give his vision of the Grid in his talk -- and also do some
preparation of the audience for what they are going to see. We have discussed
that we need to set realistic expectations -- highlight how we are using the
Internet, off the shelf hardware and software technology, and creating cost
effective nodes. Remembering that the audience is use to seeing a news cast with
feed from other sites with almost flawless video and audio -- we need to make
sure they realize that the Access Grid does not require satellite feed,
dedicated telecom lines, and an expensive studio of broadcast equipment.

For the introduction -- as Larry finishes his speech and sets the stage for what
is coming -- an image of Larry appears in the center of the screen at the live
site and remote sites. Larry then introduces the sites that are on line -- and
as he introduces them they appear in small frames around his image. Think in
terms of the Brady Bunch TV show opening. Maui is planning on being on-line --
hopefully we can also get ANL, ACCESS Center, UKY, BU, and LES. This would
demonstrate the "east coast to Maui" aspect of the Access Grid and the multicast
capabilities.

Each site should interact briefly with Larry as they are introduced. After
everyone is one line, Larry can turn the mic (so to speak) over to Rick Stevens
at Argonne who can give the audience an overview of how we are doing the Access
Grid, why it is different from other teleconferencing (I know we don't like that
word) technology, and maybe introduce the Argonne team who has led this effort
(if they promise to behave!!)

Let me know if anyone has any suggestions/comments.

Margaret
